What a Background Check in Columbia Actually Covers
Most people contact us thinking a background check is one simple thing. It’s not. A thorough background check can include several layers of screening. Which ones you need depends entirely on your situation — and we help you figure that out before we start.
🔍
Criminal History
County (Richland & Lexington), state, and federal level searches. Someone could have a conviction two counties over that never shows up locally — we don’t cut corners on scope.
💼
Employment Verification
Going back 7–10 years. Roughly half of all resumes contain some form of exaggeration. We verify dates, titles, and reasons for leaving directly with past employers.
🎓
Education Confirmation
Verify degrees, certifications, and enrollment dates. A claimed degree that doesn’t check out can disqualify a candidate or expose you to liability.
🚫
Sex Offender Registry
National and SC state registry checks. Critical for employers, landlords, churches, daycares, and anyone placing a person in contact with vulnerable populations.
🏠
Eviction History
Essential for landlords and property managers. Reveals past evictions that a tenant may not disclose. Protects your property and your other tenants.
🚗
Driving Records & Credit
For roles involving vehicles or financial responsibility. CDL drivers, delivery positions, finance roles, and property management positions often require these.
⚠️ Not Sure Which Searches You Need?
That’s common. Our team walks you through it before we start. You’re not paying for searches that don’t apply to your situation. Call 803-766-0036 or order online — we’ll figure out exactly what you need.
Who Needs Background Checks?
🏢 Employers & HR Departments
One bad hire can cost thousands in stolen inventory, legal fees, or damaged reputation. According to SHRM, the average cost of a bad hire can reach 30% of the employee’s first-year salary. Background checks are the most direct way to protect your business before someone walks through the door.
🏠 Landlords & Property Managers
Property managers near the Vista district and Forest Acres use background checks every week. A check shows criminal history, past evictions, and whether an applicant actually lived where they said. Many states give landlords broad screening latitude — so you have room to be thorough. For clients who prefer in-person service, you can also visit any of our Columbia-area locations across the Midlands.
⛪ Churches & Youth Organizations
If you’re placing volunteers around children, you owe it to those families to verify who’s in that room. Many states require background checks for certain childcare and educational roles. We make it easy — order online and get results in 24–72 hours.
👨👩👧 Families & Individuals
Maybe you’ve hired a new caregiver for an aging parent. Or you’re reconnecting with someone and want peace of mind first. Family law attorneys across the country call us regularly for documentation in custody cases. Whatever the personal reason, we handle it discreetly.

Protect Your Business Before the First Day
Businesses across the country are hiring faster than ever. But one bad hire can cost you thousands in stolen inventory, legal fees, or damaged reputation. We run employment verifications going back 7–10 years, confirming dates, titles, and degrees directly with institutions and past employers.
We also handle FCRA-compliant consent forms correctly — running a background check without proper authorization can create legal headaches fast. We’ve seen businesses get burned by this. We make sure you’re protected. Call 803-766-0036 to get started.

Screen Tenants the Right Way
You’re a property manager with vacant units and applications stacked up. How do you know who’s telling the truth? A background check shows criminal history, past evictions, and whether someone actually lived where they said they did.

Results You Can Actually Understand and Act On
A background check report can look overwhelming at first glance — codes, dates, jurisdictions, and abbreviations that don’t always make sense. We don’t send you a confusing data dump. We flag anything that needs your attention and explain what it means in plain terms.
Pay close attention to how names and dates match up. Common names can pull records that belong to someone else entirely. We verify identifiers like date of birth and Social Security number before flagging anything. If you’re an employer, federal law and many state laws require specific steps before taking adverse action — we walk you through all of it. Call 803-766-0036.

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can Odosek Lab Solutions complete a background check?
Most background checks are completed within 24 to 72 hours, depending on which searches you need. Criminal history at the county level through Richland or Lexington counties usually comes back fastest. State, federal, and employment verification searches take a little longer. Call 803-766-0036 and we can give you a realistic timeline for your specific situation.
What should I have ready when your team arrives for my background check appointment?
Have a valid government-issued photo ID ready. You will also want the full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number of the person being screened. If your employer gave you a consent form, have that printed and ready. Write down every address from the past seven to ten years — it helps us avoid missing county-level records.
Do landlords and property managers really need background checks on tenants?
Yes, and most experienced property managers already know this firsthand. A background check shows criminal history, past evictions, and whether an applicant actually lived where they claimed. Many states give landlords broad screening latitude, so you have room to be thorough. Order online and get results delivered securely in 24–72 hours.
Can a background check miss criminal records from other counties or states?
Yes, it can — if the search is not set up correctly. County-level searches only pull records from that specific county. Someone could have a conviction in a neighboring county that never shows up in a single-county search. That’s why we run county, state, and federal searches together. We don’t cut corners on scope.
Are background checks required for volunteers working with children?
Yes. Many states require background checks for certain childcare and educational roles. Churches, daycares, and youth organizations must verify volunteers who work around children. We make the process simple — order online and get results for your entire volunteer pool.
What is the difference between a basic background check and a thorough one?
A basic check usually only covers a single county criminal search. A thorough background check in Columbia includes county, state, and federal criminal records, employment verification, education confirmation, and sex offender registry checks. Which level you need depends on your situation — call us at 803-766-0036 or order online and we’ll guide you through it.
